Abstract Objectives:
Much research is available concerning exercise and caffeine but less is known about habituation in exercisers. We tested a highly-caffeinated coffee product, Via® instant coffee (VIA) vs. its decaffeinated version (DCF) on college students (21.2+3.7 y) with resistance training experience (6.4±3.7 y) who were coffee-habituated (HAB; N=10) or non-habituated (NON, N=13). We hypothesized VIA would not abolish explosive performance enhancements (p>0.05).
Materials & Methods
After 24 hours of dietary control and caffeine abstinence, fasted subjects performed three separate repetitions of strict Smith bench press under two conditions (VIA, DCF), with conditions separated by 48-72 hours. The peak force (FOR), peak power (POW), peak velocity (VEL), and maximum rate of force development (RFD) of the VIA trial were compared to DCF. FOR, POW, VEL, and RFD were measured via Ballistic Measurement System (BMS) linear displacement (XPV6+, Innervations, Inc., South Australia, Australia). The interaction of coffee and habituation were analyzed via 2x2 ANOVA with repeated measures (covariance as necessary) and Tukey HSD post hoc (Statistica 12, Statsoft, Inc., Tulsa, OK).
Results & Findings
VIA enhanced POW, VEL, and RFD across all subjects (COFFEE Main Effect p< 0.05). When adjusting for body mass, coffee did not differentially affect HAB vs. NON for VEL (delta score 0.08 + 0.04 [7.3% incr.] vs. 0.11 + 0.04 m/s [10.0% incr.]; p>0.05) or RFD (delta score 187.1 + 26.5 [12.7% incr.] vs. 65.4 + 23.2 N/s [5.9% incr.]; p>0.05). However, there was a trend for an interaction (p=0.08) for less power enhancement in HAB (549.1 + 63.4 vs. 516.5 + 58.9 W (6% incr.) vs. NON (432.7 + 55.6 vs. 388.5 + 51.6 (11% incr.).
Conclusion
These data partly support the hypothesis that caffeine-habituated and -naïve persons benefit similarly after ingesting two servings of Via instant coffee approximately one hour before Smith bench press exercise.
